Breeders in areas not close to our processing site at Laggan NSW often post their fleeces to us, sometimes at considerable cost. We would like to offer the following advice as to the most economical means of getting fleeces to us.
We have found that placing the fleece flat in a plastic bag, the lightest weight one possible, and rolling it tightly and fastening with one piece of masking tape (see photo) is the best means of reducing the size of the fleece.
You can use a clear shearing bag or a garbage bag, but be aware that there is a vast difference in the weight of various bags and you should choose a lightweight one. (For example some light weight garbage bags only weigh 25 grams, medium weight clear plastic bags 45 grams and heavyweight Alpaca Fleece bags 115grams.) All this adds to the postage costs.
Please write an identifying name or number on the bag so that when you get your fleece report back from us you will be able to identify the animals in the report and use the grid testing information in your breeding program. We have had many positive comments as to the usefulness of this information to breeders.
When you have your fleeces rolled up and taped, they can be placed in a chaff bag turned inside out, or any type of bag that you wish. Some people have used the zippered large striped plastic bags that the dollar shops sell to ship their fleeces. These bags hold a large number of fleeces and are fairly inexpensive. If you use these bags it is wise to tie a piece of string to the zipper and tie it right around the bag to ensure that it stays closed.
We hope that this information will assist you to send your fleeces to us in the most cost effective manner possible.
